Can I volunteer with refugee and asylum seeker communities in Indonesia?

If you are a refugee or asylum seeker living in Indonesia, you are welcome to volunteer for our programs with communities on the ground.

For other volunteers outside Indonesia or without lived experience of displacement, we do not offer volunteering opportunities with communities in Indonesia. We prioritize recruiting local volunteers from within the refugee and asylum seeker community to grow and sustain local skills and experience and ensure our programs are culturally and linguistically appropriate. But we do have plenty of opportunities for volunteers to get involved remotely and support from your home country!

What skills or experience do I need?

While some volunteer roles may require specific skills or experience, the most important thing you can bring is enthusiasm and a willingness to learn! We support all new volunteers to develop their skills and knowledge to be an effective contributor to the team.

Who can volunteer?

Anyone! Our team works remotely, and we all bring diverse backgrounds, languages and expertise. You just need legal permission to volunteer in the country where you live and a computer and internet for communication if you’re based outside Indonesia. We also expect all volunteers to comply with RAIC Indonesia’s Code of Conduct and policies.

How much time commitment is required to be a volunteer?

We give preference to volunteers who can commit to regular hours over a period of at least 6-months but are able to accommodate different options based on your availability (e.g., regular days each week, short-term projects or annual corporate volunteering days). Volunteers usually work with us during business hours, but our team is located around the world, so we also work outside regular ‘office’ hours and on weekends. The time commitment would be discussed and agreed upon between yourself and the RAIC Indonesia team before commencing as a volunteer.
